A Safe and Affordable Place to Call Home (research)

Through the Fourth Pig (lead partner for G.R.E.A.T) G.R.E.A.T has been invited to participate as a community partner in a SHRCC funded project entitled A Safe and Affordable Place to Call Home: A Multi-disciplinary Longitudinal Outcomes Analysis of the National Housing Strategy.

The research will examine socio-economic and health outcomes; climate impacts and mitigation; housing finance; housing alternatives; and Indigenous and northern housing. The research will also assess the effectiveness of efforts to include a rights-based approach to housing for all people living in Canada, which means adhering to principles of non-discrimination, inclusion, participation and accountability, as set out in the NHS.

William O’Brien of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, and Jacqueline Kennelly from the Sociology and Anthropology Department, both of Carleton University, will co-direct the research project.

Specfically the research will look at:

• Understanding the health (physical, mental, emotional) of residents living in social, community, or subsidized private market housing.

• Analyzing the evolution of social outcomes associated with housing investments including assessments of social inclusion and exclusion.

• Assessing the trajectory of economic outcomes relating to housing investments such as impact of housing supports, access to employment, and reliance on social benefits.

• Determining climate impacts of various forms of affordable housing, and developing climate mitigation strategies.

• Assessing the effectiveness of efforts to operationalize a rights-based approach to housing for all.

• Generating research to support the NHS Indigenous and Northern Housing initiatives.

• Researching housing alternatives (e.g. Community Land Trusts, Tiny Homes, other housing models)

G.R.E.A.T is excited to learn and share in this exciting project!
